police say 2 men showed a handgun during the robbery. they later ran away. no one was hurt. police believe these might be the same suspects that robbed the family dollar a week ago a motorcycle driver is at the uihc this morning following a crash in waterloo. police say they tried to stop the motorcycle driver around 8:30 last night because they thought he was part of an assault at cork's grocery. during the police chase, the motorcycle driver went through a red light and an s-u-v hit him. officials say the driver has serious injury to h in a kcrg t-v nine update tonight... the bremer county sheriff's office says the human remains a farmer found are probably those of a woman with dementia who disappeared this past summer. the state medical examiner's office will confirm if the remains are those of cloris mehmen who was 76. she disappeared on july 5th. the farmer found the body wednesday afternoon while harvesting a corn field. that was on 120th street, north of the town of horton. the location is about half a

this summer as authorities and volunteers searched for her. authorities do not expect any foul play. instead of working through the night, operation overnight will take a break this year. for the last 5 years, employees at geonetric in cedar rapids stage an overnight blitz to build new websites. this year they changed the schedule a bit. the workers started at 8 am thursday morning and kept going until midnight. then they'll return to their computers at 8 this morning and they're done, 5 non profit organizations in linn county will have new websites, and a 6th will get digital marketing services. "anne ohrt - it still gives me chills. the things we're able to do for these non- profits, but as i'm reminded every year what a blessing they are to us and this community, this is just a small piece of what we can give back to them." some of the organizations getting help include the cedar valley habitat for humanity, metro catholic outreach, and the african american

online presence is so vital for nonprofits. simple solutions to save lives. university of iowa researches say farmers can do small things to protect themselves when driving on rural roads during harvest season. the researchers looked at crashes involving farm equipment in 9 midwestern states. using data from 2005 to 2010, they estimate the number of crashes each year could drop by 60%, if the states required more lights and markings on farm vehicles. v we looked at did require something, so there were policies on this, but improving those policies so they are up to the current standards, our research shows would make a difference in the number of crashes. " the u-i college of public health - along with the great plains center for agricultural health - worked on this study. they say farmers also need to follow guidelines for marking their equipment.

the flooding last month.department of homela security ad gement. sidentiast of dame the mst damage to public infrastructur e came in linn county at $12.7 million dollars. in black hawk county, damage was about $3.4 million dollars. and in nearby butler county, it was about $1.6 million dollars. also, there were nearly 500 homes and businesses damad most of them were in black hawk, butler and bremer counties. the iowa board of regents have given the go ahead on a $90 million dollar renovation to the north endzone at kinnick stadium. the project will replace the existing general admission seating with upper and lower general admission seating bowls. it will also add 2 general admission concourses, a premium club level, a new video board, and a new ribbon board. the entire project should be done before the 2019

from the earthquake. the iowa board of regents is looking to add more mental health counselors to the state's 3 public universities. the regents held a first round of talks on whether they will raise tuition for students at the university of iowa, iowa state university and the university of northern iowa for this. during thursday's discussions, the regents amended their tuition and fees proposal. they're looking at increase the student health fee from $10 dollars to $12.50. that money would go to hiring those mental health counslo some high school students in elkader are doing more than most teenagers ahead of next month's elections. they're getting ready to host a debate involving candidates running for two seats in the iowa house. the debate will be tuesday night. the candidates are democrat pat ritter and republican michael bergan in house district 55 and democrat patti ruff against republican kristi hager in district 56. students have spent hours researching the issues that matter most to iowans and people in clayton county. and

questions. the teacher overseeing the project says the students are excited about it, even if some are not even old enough to vote. transportation is talking about carpooling to ease traffic on i-380. and to help people in the process the dot created a new website. each day 49,000 vehicles travel on i-380 between i-80 and the eastern iowa airport. the d-o-t says this stretch near the swisher exit has some of the most congested traffic. reports on how this program could help eliminate some of that traffic. the new program is called iowa rideshare and allows people to connect with other people who want to carpool. people can create a profile on the rideshare website and then enter in the details of their commute. the website matches people up with other commuters who live and work in the same areas. one of the options is called vanpool which gives

their own vehicle. ""if you already have say six other friends who want to utilize it, you all register and say you want to create a van pool. if you're one person who's interested in participating you register and then vride the vanpool vendor will create a community for you." " the program is geared toward young professionals but anyone can use it. you can visit our website at kcrg.com for a link to the program. in cedar rapids samantha myers kcrg- tv9 news. getting a speeding ticket from a police departmen what about a ticket from a d-o-t officer on a road in iowa? an iowa district court ruling says that an officer from iowa's d-o-t did not have legal authority to issue a ticket to a teenager. but, the d-o-t says it cannot just ignore serious traffic violations. the 16-year-old was going 30 miles per hour over the posted speed limit. seeking to challenge the ticket, a des moines lawyer dug through decades-old case law and found... this. he says the d-o-t can stop

and registration, but not speeding tickets. "it all limits the authority of the department of transportation to stop cars and vehicles maybe just trucks for issues like weight and load and registration matters but it does not call for speeding tickets and all those other moving violations " the d-o-t is in the process of reviewing its options and rights in appealing the district court decision. they have no immediate pans to stop noncommerci al enforcement in protecting traffic and going across campus at the university of iowa may now be safer for students. u-i announced a new app yesterday that provides a sort of digital guardian angel. students who use hawk watch can type in their destination and estimate how long it takes to get there. then, they pick a friend or select law enforcement as a "guardian". if the student arrives safely, they turn off the timer, but if time runs out, the app alerts the "guardian". " i look at this as another layer of security that our

use" hawk alert is based off a program called rave guardian. it also has several other safety features including sending anonymous tips to police and a panic button that calls 911 directly. we have instructions on how you can get this app with this story on kcrg dot com. 4 iowa state students are facing criminal charges this morning after a drug bust at a dorm. 3 of the students are facing charges of deliver marijuana and the 4th for unlawful possesion of a prescription drug. investigators busted the students at helser hall on the i-s-u campus. campus police say they often receive complaints about marijuana use on campus. many students say it's somewhat commonplace and it doesn't surprise them -- yet the prescription drug issue is an emerging concern. " you can really hurt yourself really easily with that. the opioid problem has been a huge deal in sort of the medical sphere." "honestly i heard about more prescription drug use in highschool but i would not be surprised if it was sort of on the rise here for college as well.

i-s-u police say they rely on students in residence halls to tell them about drug use on the president of iowa state aces more scrutiny, as the iowa board of o schol "we as t the use of the university mohaafew ises, the dears to be questionable at best." yesterday, the board called for an audit for each flight iowa state president steven leath has taken on the school's two airplanes. the review comes after questions about whether leath mis-used university resources. leath owns a home in north carolina and has flown to and from the state a number of times. he damaged a university plane in
